Cruises are popular because of the fabulous array of on-board activities and amenities that modern cruise ships offer, as well as the opportunity they give the traveller to visit many destinations in one trip. Jamaica is a popular holiday destination in the Caribbean and has modern ports and facilities where cruise ships can stop. So what are the island’s attractions that make a luxury cruise holiday in Jamaica so special?

The Caribbean island of Jamaica is a tropical paradise and wherever you stop in Jamaica, you will be sure to find plenty of things to do. Montego Bay, on the island’s north coat, is a resort town with all the attractions you would expect to find at a popular holiday destination. Here you can explore its many beaches and relax while you sunbathe or swim in the warm waters. Try snorkelling and swimming with dolphins, or venture inland for some white-water rafting. You can take a trip to the famous Negril beach, with its tall cliffs, and stop at Rick’s Café for a cocktail while you watch the cliff divers and listen to the sounds of reggae music. Putting into port gives cruisers the opportunity to do things they cannot really do on an ocean cruise liner, no matter how large or up-to-date the facilities are. Jamaica has many golf courses where golfers can test their skills, set against the most amazing and beautiful scenery.

Montego Bay is not the only cruise port in Jamaica. Tourist-friendly Ocho Rios is known for it local cuisine and shopping. Visit its craft market where you are bound to find a local bargain or browse in one of the many duty-free shops. Historic Port Antonio on the north-east of Jamaica’s coast is the least touristy of the three cruise ports. Here you can experience the beautiful surrounding countryside filled with tropical vegetation and wildlife, which in the past attracted Hollywood stars and celebrities, such as Errol Flynn.

With its friendly locals, exotic scenery and wide range of attractions, you too will fall in love with the island on your luxury cruise to Jamaica.

In the busy winter season in the last year, the island of Jamaica saw close to a double digit rise in cruise ships arriving to the island ports. The announcement was made by the tourism minister of the country on Tuesday.

The rebounding cruise ship passenger numbers is a great piece of news for Jamaica, as the country is dependent on tourism. In addition, unlike other islands in the Caribbean, Jamaica has a reputation for crime that has not done much for tourists. The main tourist incoming is from cruise ship passengers.

Last year had seen the numbers of cruise ship visitors to the island of Jamaica decrease by 1.4 per cent in the last year, from 910, 000.

It is also hoped that the numbers will rise even more in the coming years, as a cruise port has opened in Falmouth Parish. The port is in the north coast of the island, and is a two berth cruise port. The opening of the cruise port is all set to increase visitors.

The project amounted to $ 220 million, and wasa completed in three phses. It was partnered by the Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, and the Port Authority of Jamaica. Falmouth is located nestling between the famous resorts of Ocho Rios and Montego Bay.

The first visiting cruise ship came to the port in Feb, and the opening ceremony for the port was held in March as part of the arrival of the Oasis of the Seas, a 204 100 – metric – ton ( 225, 000 ), sixteen decks and more.

March 22 was when the Royal Caribbean Cruise ship, the Oasis of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world entered the Falmouth Port in Jamaica. The day marked the launch of Falmouth as the brand new port for Royal Caribbean. The port is meant for the massive five thousand four hundred passenger cruise ship. The project, which cost $ 213 million project, was finalized by Royal Caribbean in conjunction with the Jamaican Government.

Falmouth Port is the fourth port in the island of Jamaica to serve the cruise industry. The port is located strategically between Montego Bay and Ochio Rios. Both ports are located within close vicinity from Falmouth. The former is twenty minutes by car, whereas the latter is half an hour.

Falmouth is the capital of Trelawny Parish, and is not known for its tourist infrastructure. It has been famous for its sugar factories and plantations. There is a historical center, an Anglican Church dating back to the eighteenth century, as well as a shopping and history center. There are Georgian style plantation houses that brim with charm. Spelunking is an excellent activity here.

The addition of Falmouth as a port gives hope to the tourist industry of Falmouth as well as that of Jamaica. It is well known that tourism here is mainly restricted to the hotel resorts and beaches.
