New York Port sets Condition Zulu
Hurricane Irene is close, and in preparation, Captain of the Port (COTP) of New York has laid down port condition Zulu in effect from Sat for all commercial water ways. Within twelve hrs, Gale forced winds will approach the port. According to the safety rules, all bunker and cargo handling operations will come to a halt during this period. Unless specifically ordered to by the COTP, vessel movement and any other activity has been prohibited within the safety zone that has been established. All the barge operators and other commercial vessels that have been permitted to remain in the port by the Captain of the Port should be present at the mooring site, according to the plan. Tasports Announces Cruise Terminal in Hobart
Tasports or the Tasmanian Ports Corp has given confirmation to the news of their plans for a brand new cruise passenger terminal at Tasmania, a first for the island. Plans are afoot for the redevelopment of the Macquarie Wharf Shed # 2, as a facility dedicated for cruise ships and Antarctic expeditions. The shed is currently acting as a cruise transit facility. Tasports will commence construction of the terminal after the cruise season of 2011-12. The upward trend experienced by the cruise tourism industry in Australia is one of the main reasons for the new facility being announced. Concrete Work Begins on the Panama Canal Expansion Project
One of the most significant phases of the Panama Canal Expansion Project has recently begun. The concrete layering for the new series of lock sites at the Atlantic and the Pacific sides has started, crossing a major milestone in the construction. The Grupo Unidos Por el Canal S. A. or the (GUPCSA) is the contractor managing the project. The contractor begun pouring concrete at both the lock sites last March, so that the surface is leveled to prepare for the permanent concrete laying. On the Atlantic side, at Gatun, the upper chamber floor was shaped by the GUPSCA by pouring structural marine concrete. The dedicated industrial frame work into which the concrete was poured, contained a substantial amount of rebar, or steel rods or bars used in reinforcing concrete.
