The law banning the operation of casinos in cruise ships passing through the waters of Western Australia has been revoked. Earlier, many ships used to set sail deliberately to random destinations outside Western Australian waters and operate casinos. The repeal of the ban is hoped to stop such cruises to nowhere.
Gambling is legal in all other Australian states, and this law brings it in line with them. Even then, gambling is restricted only to the ships that have close to hundred passengers and are sailing in deep waters.
Terry Waldron, the minister in charge of gaming and racing operations in Western Australia, reported that this move will make good the disadvantages the tourism industry was suffering as a result of the gaming ban.
The decision was strongly applauded by many people in the state.
